Open Thread: Are Humans A Virus?

My favorite scene from The Matrix is the clip above where Agent Smith tells the captured Morpheus what he thinks about the human race. Besides the interesting observation about humanity, I just love the way Hugo Weaving delivers his lines.

Do you agree with Agent Smith's pessimistic opinion of the human race? Are we just doomed to go on polluting our environment, driving countless species to extinction, and killing each other in conflict after conflict without end? Or, like me, do you cling to the hope, however faint it might be, that the human race collectively can eventually come to its senses and temper its worst impulses?

  1. I do not view humans as a virus. I view humans as an invasive omnivorous species. Because we have removed ourselves (at least here in America (and other places)) from the area we evolved, we have escaped many of the diseases (malaria, etc) which kept us in check. We have also, through technology, removed the Malthusian restraint upon ourselves.

We are not a virus. We are Kudzu!

  2. cNo, of course we're not a virus.

But neither are we the annointed species of God.

To think of ouselves as disease, though, may well be a useful way to balance out the rampant arrogance we've shown.

  3. To the commenter who calls himself theistscientist, your last comment was deleted. Whatever your problem is with Ebon, you take it up with him. Do not use mine or anyone else'e blog to bitch and complain about being banned on someone's else's blog.

And as William Shatner told the Trekkies in that Saturday Night Live skit, "Get a life!"

  4. Humans behave sort of like a virus, infecting everything around them, taking what we want and not replacing it, often killing to get what we want.

The difference between humans and viruses is that humans have a brain and a conscience, and some of us are bothered by the things we see while others just look the other way or delude themselves with some sort of imagined justification for the things humans do.

  5. I would say there are similarities. It would also make sense as most likely every life form on Earth evolved out of the same building blocks of life. So we are most likely pretty much a distant relative of a virus. If anything you could say we are just a more "advanced" virus. You know, how the AIDS virus is so hard to cure because it mutates so fast.

I would also say, I would question how much free will we have. Viruses are programmed to do certain things and act certain ways. A bad virus is one thats messed up enough to mutate. Humans like all animals are programmed to act and do certain things to stay alive and grow. Our actual thoughts and concience mean very little to this overall program in the whole. It would be considered a mutation that wasnt intended but beneficial to survival. never the less, out basic programming to survive and grow is still there at the base.

If I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that because we fought off viruses that we're not one? Well if that's what you were trying to say, how are you sure that those weren't natural anti-viruses trying to kill us (the virus)?

Call me pessimistic, but I believe humans are very similar to a virus. We destroy everything.

  7. From the moment the first Mercedes-Benz CLS four-door "coupe" was introduced to the public, other German luxury automakers hit the drafting board. According to the German auto experts at AutoBild, Audi is just over a year away from unleashing its own cleverly packaged sedan.

  9. Hello guys,

My name is Peter and I am from Stirling in the United Kingdom. I have not long ago discovered this forum and I like it very much.
I am a little bit shy so I wont talk much about me but maybe when I will get more confortable, you will get to know me better!
My main hobbies are playing chess and watching movies. I also love outdoor activites but the temperature has been very bad for the last days or so here |.

I was wondering if someone else here is from the UK too?

I am glad to have joined this forum!
    Cya!
    :)
