Birds of Long Island: The Bluejay

It's been a while since I did a Birds of Long Island post. I selected the bluejay because I have been seeing a lot of them in my neighborhood recently. It used to be I would have maybe at most a handful of sightings per year. But in the last few weeks it seems a whole pack of them has settled in the area and it is unusual not to see them now. Even when you don't see them, you know they are in the area with their loud "jay!" call.

My wife tells me that the bluejay is her favorite bird. It is very beautiful with its sharp blue plumage. It is also noticeably larger than other common birds in the area such as cardinals, robins and sparrows.

What cool markings! Here in California the local jays aren't nearly as pretty, though I'm sure they all have the same feisty personalities. Our common jay is called a Scrub Jay, and doesn't have a crest. In our forests you can find a Stellar's Jay, which is crested and a particularly pretty shade of blue, but still without the interesting markings your jays have.

The Bluejay's around here seem huge. I have been dive bombed by them before just walking through my yard. (nesting probably)They are really pretty though.

I'm not particularly fond of the blue jays in south Louisiana. They are huge because they bully and steal from the other birds and from squirrels.

They don't dive at me. The mockingbirds are already taking care of that.

They are pretty, but I prefer the cardinal, in both appearance and song. We also have a large population of mourning doves in my neighborhood and I love those, too.

Hey Bullet!

My two previous posts in this series were the cardinal and the mockingbird.

Tina, I guess the people in your neighborhood aren't the only locals that are trouble! :-)

Yeah, that's funny Tommy!

I often have bluejays on my window sill. I leave sesame seeds for the birds -- by trial and error I found a snack that the birds like that the squirrels seem to ignore. There are quite a few living in the backyard and they can be very loud when agitated. It is wonderful to hear.
