Uhm, ... this photo ... is it by any chance depicting an Orthodox water-blessing service (Jan. 6), when the Priest throws the cross in the waters and a few swimmers race to retrieve it? Or did You just do it in Photoshop, with some other dastardly reason in mind? :-)
Lucian, the first one is correct. It's an Epiphany Day tradition wherein the first guy who gets the cross is supposed to have good health for a year. Whether or not anyone has ever compared the health of the winner to the losers every year to find out if it is true I do not know.
And Rhology gets an F, because no photoshopping was involved.
Yeah,... right,... the good ol' `different time zones` excuse... heard it like a thousand times before, man. >:) I mean, If Your prayers don't get answered and God Himself were to later fax You (after all the troble heading Your way hit You at full speed ahead): `Dude, you have to remember: we're in different time zones. I'm at work right now on my lunch break`, would YOU believe Him? Guess not! But You *DO* expect me to believe *You*, who are a mere mortal! Oh, the irony! >:)
In any case, You gotta admire the Himalayan heights of Orthodox sadism here: not only do they tie pierce the poor man to the cross, but they also throw him in the river with his hands tied to the wood and all that. That makes the Jews and Romans look weak by comparison, in my honest opinion.
I opened the image in PS first before reading the rest of the comments. I was going to say that the photo looked legit, or at least there was no evidence to suggest tampering, but then you've already shown it's legit.
I've never heard of this silly ritual before. I wonder how many get hurt in the race to the cross? From that mass of humanity and flailing limbs, it would seem the one who would have the greater health would be the one who isn't foolish enough to jump in a lake to race to a piece of wood. Add some cold weather, and I think one would REALLY be better off staying on the sidelines.
Caption? Hmmm....

You're beginning to sound just like one o' them scholars who go through ancient manuscripts all day long. :D
I wonder how many get hurt in the race to the cross?
None. There's a certain "art" to these swimmers dipping half-naked into the freezing waters on Epiphany without getting sick, just like there's a certain "art" to our Priests babe-tizing babies by full threefold immersion without drowning any of them in the process. :D
Add some cold weather, and I think one would REALLY be better off staying on the sidelines.
It *IS* already cold, since this happens in January. :-)
Well unlike some of those scholars, especially biblical ones, there are practical applications for spotting digital forgery, and as a "Photoshopper", I should be able to spot a fake from a real photo, damn it!
"It *IS* already cold, since this happens in January"
Perhaps the one who gets the cross first then becomes immune to "shrinkage", too. :)

Your silence says it all. So I'll just have to take it that it IS an Orthodox water-blessing after all.
(Just kiddin`...I've just now seen that the name of the image-file being linked at is EpiphanyDay.jpg)
:-)

Dude, you have to remember where in different time zones. I'm at work right now on my lunch break.
Sorry, meant "we're in different time zones"! Ugh!

Ugh!
Ah, yes: the barbaric battle-cry of the angry, frustrated atheist, rising its voice like that of a muezzin's call to prayer. >:) QED.
(I knew that sooner or later You were going to give Yourslef away).

Well, ... there are plenty more where THIS came from, baby. >:)

BTW, I got the idea from the latest edition of National Geographic, which has a picture of the Epiphany Day lake dive.
Okay, at first I didn't see the cross, I was focusing on those bodies...:)
I thought, well damn, the guy in the wet suit will win this race. :)
Tina, you mean, you were having momentary lustful thoughts? ;-)
By the way, I just thought of my own caption contribution:
Atheist guys jump into a freezing cold lake to retrieve a cross for the chance to win a date with Salma Hayek.
Ok, now you're speaking my language
