Pet Peeve of the Day - October 27, 2007

Charities that provide you with postage paid envelopes in the solicitations they send you in the mail, but on the postage paid envelope they put that message "Your stamp will help save us needed funds!"

Gimme a break! I'm mailing them a check for $200! They can cover the damned postage!

I've started this Charity I've named HMF Charities, Ltd. (HMF stands for Home Mortgage Fund).

If I send you a postage paid envelope, will you send my charity $200? It's a good cause. :)

How about I mail YOU the stamps for putting on your mortgage payment envelopes?

:-)

Well, every little bit helps.

You'll be rewarded in a greater place.

If its a charity you don't like you can always tape a brick to the SASE and mail it back to them.

Hey Tommy,

I'm not sure if you remember me, but I used to waste your comment space with my banter on the validity of theistic beliefs. If you still don't remember, I would often write "anxiously awaiting your thoughts," which, I'm sure, you may have found annoying. The reason I am writing now is because I am currently taking a course that requires me to interview two people who hold either atheistic or theistic beliefs. Since I find atheists to be much more interesting and engaging, I elected to find an atheist to interview. Unfortunately, however, I do not have any friends that are atheists, something that I hope will change. If you are interersted in helping me out, please let me know how I can get some questions to you. I can email it to you, or post it on my now forsaken blog. I would keep the questions short (5-7 questions) and send you a copy of the final essay so you can be sure that I haven't distorted your words. It's not for debating purposes. It is purely to hear a different perspective, to which I am to write reflections. If you would like, I can even keep it anonymous. In the event that I ask something uninteresting, you are more than welcome to propose a question that you would like to comment on. Well, let me know what you think. I hope you're doing well.

Sincerely,

Jason

Hi Jason.

Write your questions here, and if they are reasonable, I will answer them.

Hey Tommy,

I really appreciate your willingness to participate in this interview. Hopefully, none of my questions will be unreasonable, lest my grade suffers for lack of scholarship. Also, I hope none of my questions will be too personal; and you certainly don't have to answer them if they are. If there is a question that I have not asked, but you would like to pose and comment on, feel free to do that. Once again, please know that I am not looking to debate you on any of your responses. I am only to reflect on them. However, in the event that I may need some clarity, I hope you won't mind if I ask you a follow-up question. Thanks again! I look forward to your responses.

Sincerely,

Jason

1) Have you always been skeptical towards religious beliefs? If not, would you mind describing the definitive moment or gradual process that led you to an atheistic worldview?

2) What do you find to be the greatest obstacle to religious belief? Please feel free to write more than one.

3) Do you believe there is any intellectual merit to a theistic worldview?

4) Although you may not find them to be ultimately convincing, what arguments/assertions, if any, are most compelling for belief in a deity? How has this argument for theism ultimately been inadequate for you?

5) Is the worldview you possess today the result of an inconsistency in religious belief alone? If not, what do you find most compelling about atheism?

6) Please describe your experience with theists who attempt to persuade you towards religious beliefs.

7) Is there any advice you would give to theists who seek to convince the world of their beliefs?

Tommy,

If you don't mind, could you use a new post to answer these? I am looking forward to your answers.

These may be some good questions to tag others with, too.

Hi Jason.

Your questions seem fair and reasonable to me.

Hi Harry. I actually was planning to do my response to Jason's questions as a post. I will try to get to it as soon as I can.
