Pet Peeve of the Day - September 1, 2008

It's been a while since I really felt the need to complain about something. Well, the time has finally come again.

Since yesterday evening, there has been an awful stench in my bedroom. My wife and I searched all around the room and found nothing that could plausibly be the source of the odor. My wife is convinced there is a dead mouse somewhere (we have had problems with mice off and on over the last six years). I checked to make sure there were no dead mice between the basement ceiling squares and the floor with a negative result.

I put down scented powder and vacuumed the bedroom carpet. For a short time it seemed to make a difference, but the smell returned. I have to admit I am at a loss here. Maybe a dead mouse will turn up in one of my wife's shoes or something. You can be sure I will be sleeping with the window cracked wide open and the fan on oscillate mode tonight!

You've checked the ceiling/attic as well?

If you don't have a dog, maybe you can borrow one (like a beagle) and see if they can isolate the smell for you. Or you can do what I had to do in my son's room when the cat decided to mark his room - I completely emptied it. As I was going through everything, I picked up a box of baseball cards and immediately realized I held the source of the odor in my hands. That pretty much took care of it.

Otherwise, get one of those new candle-but-not-really-a-candle things from Glade. Oh! And good luck!

Hi JCE!

The smell seems strongest in my closet in the room, so I don't think it is coming from up above.

I am hoping that soon either the cause will be discovered or the smell will just dissipate with time.

Your closet....?Is it your shoes? Just kidding!
Try living with a neighbor that likes to burn GARBAGE at night while you try to sleep with the window fans blowing into your room to keep it cool.
Sorry, in a bad mood, no sleep. :(

Many times I have heard of "varmits" burrowing into the areas between the studs in a home, having offspring, and then the bunch dies and leaves their stench behind.

Male cats will also create "litter boxes" for themselves!

My theory is that it is an article of clothing in my closet, as the smell seems strongest in the closet. I have no idea why, but I have to follow my nose and go where the evidence leads. As drastic as it may seem, I will start washing all the clothes in my closet. It is possible that I wore something and put it back in the closet without washing it.
