Pet Peeve of the Day - November 3, 2007

Able-bodied people in front of me at the supermarket checkout counter who don't bag their own groceries! Instead of grabbing a bag and putting their groceries in it while the register clerk is ringing up the rest of the items, they just stand there and watch it accumulate, and then, they watch as the register clerk bags all of the groceries for them.

The wait time at the registers can be greatly reduced when people bag their own groceries, so that by the time the clerk has scanned the last item, virtually all of the customer's groceries have been bagged and put in the shopping cart. Payment is transacted and then the next customer can be immediately rung up.

I hate that, too. People are so lazy.

Agreed. That is a good one. What gets me even more than that is the asshat who has to stand there and chat with the cashier long after completing his or her purchase while the line continues to grow.

How about people who have ten million coupons, and they don't have them ready and have to sort through them before they pay???

Another one that irks me is people who write checks real, real, real slow...or have to dig through their purse to find their ATM card of checkbook...or money. I always have mine ready before I get in line.

I was going to do another peeve post today but will just add it here.

With Election Day coming up, you have local candidates ambushing you when you step out of the supermarket. You get the idiots in front of you who just stand there gaping at the literature that was just handed to them. Take it to the car and look at it moron! And let the candidates step back a little further so that we can have an escape route!

How about markets that never have enough bag boys around to keep that kind of thing from happening?

Or fail to put a bar code on the mushrooms and the cashier has to call Theron out of the stock room to price them?

Or athies who object to a chocolate Easter biddy in the check out line and hold everybody up while they fumble through their pockets for the telephone number of the ACLU?

I always move my cart out of the way and bag my own groceries, by the way, when there's no bag boy around...

get real -- *sigh*

(How about xians who feel they must stop and tell people about their imaginary sky daddy on a busy street and block pedestrian traffic?...now THAT does happen!

I have another one about grocery stores...

when you have 20 packets of Kool Aid drink mix and the cashier doesn't know how to do 20 x .25 on the cash register and scans each little packet individually. That has happened to me on more than one occasion, and with different products.

Given their warped outlook on all things religious I thought athies bought Kool Aid by the box car load dusty...

bedrock,
Jim Jones is the one given credit for the Kool-Aid. A bleever if ever there was one - not atheist. Now you're just showing everyone how ignorant you really are.

Stardust said...

bedrock, actually atheists don't add poison to their Kool Aid, ...as Soitgoes pointed out, that is a god botherer thing to do.

Stardust said...

. . .and it's good to see that bedrock is still reading atheist blogs. Keep questioning. ;)

Are you under the delusion that atheism ISN"T a religion Sogo?

Just check the dogma and the testimony of the faithful here and on dozens of other athie sites all over the blogosphere.

And if Kool-Aid drinkers represent the outer fringe, I'd say the 6-8 per cent that make it a life style protesting and witnessing against a higher power pretty well lines up there as well...

Bedrock, atheism is a religion like not collecting stamps is a hobby.

Kool-aid drinkers are people who do what they are told by somebody whom they endow with authority over them. Do you see any instances on my blog where I advocate doing anything because Richard Dawkins or some other grand poobah of atheism said so? The answer of course is no, because as a skeptic and freethinker, I go where the evidence leads me using my powers of intellect and reason.

If you were to read my entire blog, you would note that I have had posts urging qualified people to donate blood and to participate in a litter cleanup event on International Coastal Cleanup Day. I have devoted several posts to Malaysia, an Islamic majority country that while ostensibly recognizing minority faiths, does not allow for Malaysians identitied as Muslim to change their religion to another religion, including Christian. I provided a link to the Malaysian Embassy web site so that interested readers could register their complaints. Now why would I do that? Because I recognize the importance of freedom of religious belief and pluralism.

I wish I had more free time so that I could expand the scope of this blog to cover social justice issues, but it is very hard between commuting to and working full time in NYC and taking care of my kids mostly by myself because my wife works night hours. You see, I actually live those family values that the Republicans and the Religious Right like to pontificate about.

That being said, I do plan to expand this blog soon to address issues like sex trafficking, which I would add, is a perfect issue for religious and secular Americans to work together on.

And as for people on the checkout line ahead of me buying Easter bunnies or other candy with a religious theme, I don't have to worry about that anymore because I got my local ACLU chapter to get the supermarket to stop selling it 5 years ago! :-)

I bag my groceries too. I actually prefer it because then I'm sure the bags will make it home intact.

Atheism is a religion. That's funny. NOT!
